"...If i was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an' work, an' no trouble."
George says this out of frustration towards Lennie. It is hard to find work with Lennie, or if he does find a job, Lennie ruins it. He is saying that he would go through life so much easier without Lennie around. Even though Lennie can be a handful to deal with, George would never leave him because he would worry too much about him. They both care about each other and have their backs.

In the first chapter, we meet the two main characters, George and Lennie. They are two ranch workers who also happen to be friends. The unemployment rate is high during this time period and Lennie and George are on their way to a nearby ranch to find new work. They used to live in a town called Weed, but they had escape. Lennie touched a girl's dress, and she started screaming. A bunch of guys were looking for Lennie and George so they had to leave town. George is like a parent to Lennie and looks out for him and lets him know right from wrong. I got the impression that Lennie has some type of problem, because of his behavioral actions. He drank water from the river like a horse, he walks like a bear, and he likes to keep mice in his pocket to pet. Towards the end of the chapter George gets frustrated at Lennie and says that he could live so much easier without Lennie. At supper he realizes that he just couldn't live without Lennie.
