In this chapter, Kira, Thomas, and Matt went to the floor below, only to hear Jamison's voice and the child crying. After the child stopped crying she began to sing, and Matt knew her from the fen. Both her parents died, and she was brought here because orphans who sing cannot be given away. Her name is Jo and she is younger than Matt.
When Jamison came to visit Kira, she told him about how she heard growling on her way to the dyer and how Annabella told her that there are no beasts. Jamison was shocked that someone with so much knowledge would say that. After Jamison left, Kira felt the piece of cloth, but felt no comfort from it. It left her with a warning.

In this chapter, Kira did not remember the dream she had the night before , but she knew that it told her something important, but she did not know what it was. Recently, Jamison has been stopping by Kira twice a day to see the progress that was made on the robe. He had said that after this year's gathering and restoration, she will have an entire section to work on for many years. Kira placed her hand on that section, but she didn't feel any magic there, only emptiness. On the robe, lay a complex story of beautiful green waters, beasts by the shore, men "bloodied" by the hunt, unique dwellings, and fires. But Kira noticed a pattern in the robe; Ruin, Rebuilding, Ruin, Regrowth....
During the night, Thomas and Kira keep hearing sounds of a child crying that came from the floor below them. They are headed to explore now, the floor that seemed to be a mystery. In this chapter, when Kira was walking to Annabella's living space, she was alone. She felt as if a beast was behind her, growling, and watching her. When she arrived at the dyer's area, she said that "there be no beasts" and that it may have been a human. Kira was left confused, and afraid. At supper, she asked Thomas if he ever saw a beast, and he said he only saw ones dead, like rabbits and deer. Kira lie in bed, still thinking of her walk in the forest and what Annabella said. As she drifted asleep, her scrap of cloth told her something important about her father. But as she woke from her sleep, "she did not know it was there at all".
In this chapter, Thomas and Kira look for Matt and Branch in the crowd of men fighting with spears, getting ready for the hunt. This was not a place for a little tyke, and luckily, they found Matt and Branch unharmed, and brought them back to their quarters. The boy and dog were washed and cleaned up and joined Kira and Thomas for dinner. After they left, Kira was talking about how her one piece of cloth that she made when she was little, somehow calms her, but also warns her when there is danger, by signaling things like warmth. Thomas related to that, but with a piece of wood. So what are these special objects trying to tell them?
In this chapter, Kira looks at the Singer's Robe deeper and realizes that there is only a little bit of ancient faded blue on it. She wants to create the color, like her mother wished to do also. Thomas tries to help Kira memorize the plants and the colors, and he offered to write them down for her. In this village girls are forbidden to write and read, but only special boys are chosen to be able to do that. Kira also visits her mother's old garden, only to find that most of it was destroyed, and the pen for the tykes is already halfway built. She managed to gather a few plants to practice dyes while she was there.
We also learn that Thomas's main assignment is the Singer's Staff, which is a piece of wood with carvings of stories from the past. He is to restore it, just like Kira is to restore the robe. At the end of the chapter, men are beginning to prepare for another hunt, but when Kira and Thomas look out the window, they find that the little tyke Matt and his dog have joined them. In this chapter, Kira, Matt, and Branch set out in the woods to find Annabella. When they finally reach her, she didn't seem surprised, because she knew of Kira's new job to finish the robe. Kira's mom used to go to Annabella to learn to dye the threads, and she knew that Kira needed to do the same. Annabella introduced Kira to all different kinds of plants in her garden and which ones make what color, and for now she gave Kira colored ones to start the robe. Kira would have to go back everyday to learn to dye like her mother, but to find the color blue would be a whole other journey.
In this chapter we meet Thomas, another boy who lives in a quarter in the Council of Edifice. He is the carver and has been there ever since he was a small tyke when his parents died. He was put in here because of his amazing talent, much like Kira. They have become friends and Thomas was explaining a lot about how they live here.
When Kira started her work, she noticed that all the threads didn't have any color. Jamison thought Kira knew how to dye, but the truth is Kira was never taught because her mother fell ill. Next, Kira is going to visit Annabella, who lives far in the woods, and has a remarkable threading talent, so she can teach her to dye. She might be finishing what her mother never started. In this chapter, Kira enters her new living place in the Council of Edifice. She has never had such an elegant room before, and now everything she has is lavish. Matt and his dog Branch helped Kira with her belongings and they were amazed by what they saw. When Kira starts her work, she will have every material possible at her fingertips. Matt had saved a few special items like her mother's necklace and her threading frame, which meant so much to her. Nothing so elegant has been brought to Kira in her whole life, or so lonely.
In this chapter, the Singer's Robe was presented in front of Kira again since last year. Every year her mother used to fix a couple stitches on the robe before the Gathering ceremony. Jamison was told that Kira's work was much greater than her mother's. The decision was that Kira could stay, and she would repair, restore, and complete the robe, as her mother would have done. Vandara would have the land to complete the pen for the tykes. Kira would live in the quarters now and go far beyond her mothers work. Matt saved Kira some of her belongings before the house was set on fire, and now Kira would embark on her new journey. Everyone would continue on with their lives and nothing will change, except for Kira.
In this chapter, we meet Jamison, Kira's defender. He recites everything the accuser, Vandara claims, and he goes through every flaw. "She does not contribute to work, she tells stories to the tykes that later interrupts work, she is slow, and she eats a lot." We also learn that Jamison knew Kira's father very well and watched him being taken by the beasts. However, despite her twisted leg, she has contributed in the weaving shed and helps a lot by picking up scraps and cleaning up, which is greatly appreciated. She does not eat a lot and Vandara's accusation was not true, which was brought up during the trial. Her skill to thread has grown over the years and has taken her mother's work to a new level, by introducing color to cloth.
